Michael as Points of Light Ambassador

MJ with George W. Bush Sr 1992

In 1989, President George Bush Snr’s inaugural address invoked the vision of a “thousand points of light” – a call to action for American citizens to lend their services to the community.

In 1990, the Points of Light Foundation was created to encourage people to volunteer in their community. It has now been in operation for 20 years.

In 2009, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy ‘Serve America Act’, heralding the next phase of America’s renewed call to service. Originally titled the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act (GIVE Act), the bill reauthorizes and expands the AmeriCorps program first established in 1993.

Michael was a Points of Light Ambassador and in 1992, spoke at an awards ceremony at the White House, honoring the 21 winners of the 1992 President’s Annual of Light.
